WASPS WIN 15-8 IN OPENER

Todd Woodall caught an Eric Montgomery pass and ran 91 yards with 1 minute, 38 seconds remaining as Emory & Henry beat Cumberland 15-8 on Saturday in Williamsburg, Ky.

Woodall's touchdown reception was set up by a Ricky Webb interception at the Wasps' 9.

Freshman J.D. Davis scored on a 4-yard run for Emory & Henry in the second quarter. The Wasps also scored on a safety in the first period when Cumberland snapped the ball out of the end zone from punt formation.

WILLIAMSBURG - Shawn Knight threw for 191 yards and three touchdowns as the Tribe made a successful debut in the Yankee Conference with a victory over the Wildcats.

Knight, a junior, completed 12 of 18 passes. His scoring plays covered 14 yards to fullback Greg Parker, 30 yards to Mike Tomlin and 24 yards to Terry Hammons.

New Hampshire quarterback Jim Stayer, who completed 11 of 18 passes for 98 yards, threw two touchdown passes. The second, a 6-yarder to Mike Allan with 4:58 left in the first half, helped the Wildcats tie the score at 14.

The Tribe responded with a 65-yard drive, including a 23-yard pass from Knight to Paul Horne, before going ahead to stay on Knight's scoring toss to Tomlin with 2:51 remaining in the half.

HARRISONBURG - Sophomore Gary Lyons, making his first start at quarterback, passed for two touchdowns and ran for two to lead the Dukes to a victory over Division II Lock Haven. Division I-AA James Madison scored on its first six possessions to go up 38-3 at halftime, and the Dukes finished with 568 total yards, including 395 on the ground.

LYNCHBURG - Travis Wilemon threw for 222 yards and four touchdowns on 14-of-14 passing to lead the Flames to a victory over Division II Concord. Running back Adrian Cherry rushed for 109 yards on six carries for Liberty. He returned a punt 22 yards and scored on a 78-yard run.

WASHINGTON - Jay Walker threw two touchdowns among his 296-yards passing to lead the Bison to a victory over the Panthers in the opener for both schools. Howard led 10-7 at halftime, following sluggish play that saw 25 penalties called on both teams for a total of 197 yards.

BANNER ELK, N.C. - Rama Nightingale scored on a 1-yard run to tie the score, but Manuel Cruz missed the extra-point try as Lees-McRae tied the Shipbuilders.

NORFOLK - Virginia State's Greg Clark threw for two touchdowns and ran for one as the Trojans ruined the Norfolk State debut of coach Archie Cooley.

Cooley, joining the Spartans after establishing a reputation for powerful offenses during a long tenure at Mississippi Valley State, saw Norfolk State score on its second possession. Kermit Buggs connected with Travis Ramseur on a 44-yard scoring pass play to make it 7-0, but it was all downhill from there for Norfolk, which lost four fumbles and was limited to 186 total yards.

LEBANON, Tenn. - Chris Jefferson ran for scores of 3 and 35 yards to help Cumberland pick up a victory over Clinch Valley. The winning score came with 13:33 remaining when Mario Porter dived in from 1 yard.
