FERRUM HOLDS OFF THOMAS MORE 16-8

Led by sophomore quarterback Millard Vining, Ferrum opened its season with a 16-8 upset victory over Thomas More on Saturday.

Thomas More was ranked No. 11 in NCAA Division III by Sports Illustrated.

Vining ran 28 yards for a touchdown and completed 13 of 20 passes for 127 yards. But after holding Thomas More scoreless most of the game, Ferrum almost saw its lead slip away in the fourth quarter.

The Panthers led 16-0 halfway through the period, but Thomas More's Ryan Reynolds scored on an 11-yard run. And when More's Derrick Jett caught the two-point conversion pass from quarterback Larry Hutson, Ferrum's lead was cut in half.

More got the ball back with a little less than four minutes to play and drove to its 45-yard line. Hutson then threw an apparent 55-yard touchdown pass to Don Calhoun, but the score was called back because of a holding penalty on More center Rick Lehmkuhl. The Panthers held and the hosts turned over the ball on downs.

Ferrum opened the scoring in the second quarter on senior wide receiver James Williams' 10-yard run. Ferrum added to its lead in the third quarter with Vining's touchdown run, and David Waddell made it 16-0 early in the fourth quarter with a 27-yard field goal.

The Panthers' defense did the rest, intercepting four of Hutson's passes, three in the first half. \
