HOME SALES UP OVER JULY 1992

Home sales in Virginia rose 2.6 percent in July over July 1992, but year-to-date sales are running just under year-earlier levels, according to a report released last week by the Virginia Association of Realtors.

The Richmond-based trade group reported 5,836 homes were placed under contract in July by its members, up from 5,687 contracts signed in July 1992. In the first seven months, 40,060 homes were under contract, down 0.1 percent from 40,106 through July 1992.

Market conditions continue to favor both buyers and sellers, said VAR president Edward E. Pagett, with low mortgage rates prodding buyers and sellers benefiting from interest in housing.

"With one month left in the summer season, I feel that it is time to declare this our best summer since 1990," Pagett said.
