The Montgomery County-Radford unit will announce its goal Thursday during its first "Day of Caring." More than 100 volunteers will spend the afternoon working on about 20 projects for the agencies served by the joint United Way. The day will conclude with an informal campaign kick-off dinner for the volunteers at Corning in Christiansburg.
Pulaski County's United Way has set a goal of $230,000, the same amount raised last year when the goal was $200,000. About 200 invitations have been sent to agencies and volunteers to attend a picnic in Jackson Park Thursday to kick off this year's campaign, said Donna Broadstreet.
Bonnie Svrcek, assistant town manager for Blacksburg, is the campaign chair of the Montgomery County-Radford United Way.
"Montgomery County and Radford's United Way agencies provide numerous essential services, but they need more money to operate," Svrcek said in a news release. "Day of Caring 1993 gives people another way to help their neighbors who receive assistance from these agencies. And the best part is, they will get a first-hand look at how the time and money they donate helps United Way agencies."
Last year, $748,000 was raised.
Thursday's projects include constructing a storage building for Habitat for Humanity, delivering Meals on Wheels, helping Big Brothers, Big Sisters match volunteers with clients and providing assistance at a Red Cross Bloodmobile.
The projects will be done between 12:30 and 4:30 p.m. and most of the volunteers are taking time off from their jobs to participate.
