Showcase of Arts

The League of Roanoke Artists will present its eighth annual Showcase of the Arts Sept. 19-Oct. 3 at The Arts Place on the corner of North Jefferson and Gilmer Avenue in Roanoke.

The juried exhibit is open in all media to area artists 18 and older. New York teacher and artist Larry Herowitz will judge.

Deadline for entry is Sept. 12. For information, call 389-4276.

\ Ballet auditions

The Southwest Virginia Ballet will hold open auditions for company membership Sept. 18 at the Post School of Ballet Studio at 305 E. Calhoun St. in Salem.

Dancers 11-13 will register between 10 and 10:30 a.m. with auditions from 10:30-noon.

Dancers ages 14 and up will register from 12:30-1 p.m. with auditions from 1-2:30 p.m.

The company also will hold open auditions for ``The Nutcracker'' on Sept. 26 at the Post School.

Adults will audition from 1:30-2:30 p.m. and children from 3-4 p.m. Some minor acting and dancing abilities are preferred for the adults.

``The Nutcracker'' will be presented Dec. 18-19 at the Roanoke Civic Center auditorium.

The Southwest Virginia Ballet is a regional company that presents classical and contemporary ballets, modern and jazz works.

\ Art award winners

Area artists have won awards in the juried 1993 Virginia Highlands Art Festival in Abingdon.

Receiving Awards of Distinction were Z.L. Feng of Radford (who also received the People's Choice Award), Nadine C. Allen of Blacksburg and Vera Dickerson of Troutville.

Awards of Merit went to Ernest Johnson, formerly of Roanoke, and Brenda Tatum of Rocky Mount.

Receiving Honorable Mention were Lyndall Mason of Radford, Martha Brown Mayo of Daleville and Patricia T. Carr of Roanoke.

\ Video works

The Greensboro (N.C.) Artists League is asking area video and film makers to submit work for ``Moving Still/Still Moving,'' a program of video shorts scheduled for exhibit Oct. 6 at the Greensboro Cultural Center.

Video works in all styles will be considered, including animation and experimental work. Pieces must be between five and 10 minutes long, edited on half-inch VHS tape, and submitted by Sept. 25 to Greensboro Artists League, Greensboro Cultural Center, 200 N. Davie St., Greensboro, N.C. 27401.
