STAR UNDER-9 BOYS WIN SOCCER TOURNAMENT

For the second consecutive week, the Roanoke Star under-9 boys' soccer team won a tournament title. The Star capped an impressive weekend with a 9-0 rout of Arsenal F.C. (Hanover) in the championship game of the Region 2000 Invitational in Lynchburg.

Josh Davidson had two goals to lead the attack during the tournament, but it was the defense that dominated throughout the weekend as the Star outscored four opponents 31-0. Roanoke got a strong effort from backs Justin Krehbiel, Greg Danahy and Drew Murray, along with excellent goalkeeping from Shane Draper and Billy Butler.

The Roanoke Star Under-16 Green boy's team won the under-17 White Division. The Star defeated the Fauquier Sabres under-17 team 3-2 in a shootout for the title. Jon Seale led Roanoke with three goals in the tournament.

Races ran late Saturday night at Franklin County Speedway in Callaway. Pure Stock points leader R.W. Lawhorn prevailed in a 25-lap race. Mike Owens, last year's points champion, was second and Kenny McKinney finished third.

With the track facing a midnight curfew, the Rookie and Any Car races were shortened to 15 laps each. Points leader Steve Hurley was the Rookie winner, besting Neal Amos (second) and Gary Clifton (third). Dean Sutphin won the Any Car nightcap.
