GILBERT DUNCAN, FORMER CARROLL SHERIFF, DIES AT 89

Gilbert Wiley Duncan, who spent more than 40 years in law enforcement in Floyd and Carroll counties, died Saturday at Radford Community Hospital.

He was 89 and lived at Hillsville.

A native of Floyd County, he started his career as a deputy sheriff in that county.

He later became chief of police in Hillsville and sheriff of Carroll County. He retired from that position in 1968.

The funeral will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Indian Creek Primitive Baptist Church, with burial in the church cemetery.

The family asked that memorials be made to the church.

Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
