Only the bow of the vessel had been dug up and workers were trying to clear tons of sand from the rest of the hull, reported Hurriyet, a major national daily. The submarine was unearthed by miners digging for coal on a strip of land reclaimed from the sea 30 miles northwest of Istanbul, the paper said.
Two torpedoes were found live in forward tubes, suggesting that the sub was sunk while preparing for combat, the newspaper said. Turkish navy experts defused the torpedoes. Nazi Germany operated a fleet of submarines in the Black Sea against the Soviet navy and Allied merchant ships during World War II.
