MOUNTAIN BIKE WINS FOR WARDEN

If you hunt or fish in the Bath County area, don't be surprised to see Sgt. William Tuttle, a state game warden, show up in strange places and in strange ways to check you out.

Tuttle, 57, was the first Virginia warden to use a mountain bike to patrol remote areas. His superiors say the method is quiet, cheap and effective.

He also organized a back-country ATV patrol, and determined it would be better to use a jet boat rather than a canoe to patrol the Jackson River. The jet boat is faster and maneuvers in shallow water better. One officer can operator it, rather than the two required for a canoe.

Tuttle's innovative ideas, coupled with his efforts in education and enforcement, have earned him the Warden of the Year award from the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries.

He joined the department Nov. 1, 1968 and became a sergeant in 1973.
