CRASH PARALYZES MOTORCYCLE CHAMPION

Three-time defending world motorcycle champion Wayne Rainey of the United States is paralyzed from the waist down as a result of a crash during the Italian Grand Prix, a doctor said in Italy.

Rainey, 32, of Los Angeles, sustained spinal and abdominal trauma in the crash, Dr. Doriano Zappi said in a telephone interview from the neurological intensive care unit at a hospital in the northern city of Cesena. Zappi could not say if the paralysis was permanent.
