VIRGINIA TECH WOMEN NET FIRST EVER VARSITY VICTORY

Virginia Tech's women's team defeated Liberty 4-3 on Monday in Lynchburg to earn its first victory ever as a varsity team. Brooke Fuller scored two goals and Tisha Truman and Christine Livingstone scored one each for the Hokies (1-0).

At Durham, N.C., A.J. Siebeneck scored three goals to lead second-ranked Duke to a 9-1 romp over Roanoke College in a men's game Monday night. Rick Wells scored Roanoke's only goal, giving the Maroons a short-lived 1-0 lead.

At Charlottesville, eighth-ranked Virginia (2-0) got goals from Jennifer Gilpatric, Kristen DiMillio and Erin Riddle in a 3-0 win over UNC-Greensboro (0-1).

The Roanoke Star Under-17 White boy's soccer team finished second at the Williamsburg Cup Soccer Tournament in Williamsburg Sunday. Kenneth Ekstrom scored the lone goal as the Star beat Chesapeake 1-0 in a semifinal shootout. Roanoke lost to the Williamsburg Hot Spurs 1-0 in the final.

The Roanoke Star Under-16 White team also lost in a championship game Monday, 2-0 to the Richmond Capitals. Brian Sharp scored the only goal on an assist by John Prillaman as Roanoke downed the the Stafford Storm 1-0 in a semifinal on Sunday.

The Roanoke Star Under-15 White team defeated the Greensboro Buccaneers Red 5-0 in the championship of the Lynchburg Region 2,000 Tournament on Monday. Don Haga scored two goals for Roanoke while Ernie Hale, Jason Esgurrea and Tien Cao added a goal each.

The Roanoke Star Under-11 White team defeated the Lynchburg Sabres 4-1 to take the title in the Under-12 division. Roanoke finished 4-0 in the tournament, outscoring its opponents 23-3.
