ROANOKE MEN WIN IN SOCCER

Dustin Fonder scored two goals Tuesday as Roanoke College defeated Emory & Henry 7-0 in a men's soccer match at Emory.

Six Maroons scored as Roanoke (1-1) spoiled the Wasps' season-opener.

In other area sports:

At Boiling Springs, N.C., freshman goalkeeper Daniella Giusto had 17 saves, but it wasn't enough as Gardner-Webb pounded Ferrum's women's soccer team 3-0 on. Gardner-Webb outshot Ferrum 23-10.

Josh MacDermod's three goals led Roanoke Valley Christian to a 6-2 season-opening high school soccer victory over Lynchburg Christian. The Eagles scored four goals in the first 15 minutes. Although both teams compete in the Virginia Independent Conference, the game did not count in the conference standings.
