THE PEOPLE COLUMN

Former Olympic diving champion Greg Louganis has his first big acting role in "Jeffrey."

He says the stage is quite different from diving.

"In diving, you're alone on a 10-meter platform, you don't have a whole lot on, and you have seven people judging you on a scale of 0 to 10," he said.

"Here, you have the support of other cast members - it's support and competition, but competition in a good way."

Louganis plays the role of Darius, a chorus boy who develops AIDS, in the off-Broadway production.

While it is the biggest part he's ever had, it is not Louganis' debut. He danced in a production of "Cat In The Hat" when he was 3 years old.

\ Country singer Vince Gill and Anthony Mason of the New York Knicks will help select the design for a new arena in downtown Nashville.

The two are on a panel that will pick from five designs for the $100 million arena, planned in Nashville for athletic events, concerts and facilities for producing television specials.

Helping Gill and Mason, who played college basketball at Tennessee State, will be four architects.

The six will meet Thursday and Friday and are expected to make a recommendation to Nashville Mayor Phil Bredesen on Friday.

\ Simon Cunliffe-Lister, 15, has become lord of the manor after inheriting a $15 million Elizabethan estate complete with a butler.

Burton Agnes Hall, in the Humberside district outside London, was left to Cunliffe-Lister by a distant cousin who died childless but wanted to keep the house in the family. The teen-ager, who plays in a rock band, will not take over running the stately home until he is 25.
