To head the new unit, NBC named Charles M. McGuire, who was among several senior executives fired abruptly last month by First Union National Bank as part of the continuing reorganization of its Dominion Bank operations in Roanoke. McGuire had been vice president and head of private banking for Dominion.
William R. Reed Jr., president of Memphis-based NBC's parent, National Commerce Bancorp., said McGuire will generate a market for loans to professional and executive clients with a focus on medical, legal, accounting and small business customers.
NBC, which opened at six Roanoke-area Kroger's seven weeks ago, said it has acquired $33 million in deposits in the Roanoke Valley and Blacksburg.
The bank said its plans call for additional branches and an expansion of services, including a commercial loan office and investment services. NBC employs 28 people in its regional operations.
Reed said NBC wanted to start an executive or private banking division quickly. The key was finding the right person with experience and market knowledge, he said.
McGuire moves to NBC from Dominion, which operates the largest private banking center in the Roanoke Valley.
He has 21 years of local banking experience, including seven years in private banking and private banking management.
McGuire said he joined NBC because of its profitability, growth and innovative ideas. He said he will provide a highly personalized financial center for the affluent market.
The private banking office initially will be with NBC's administrative offices at the Tanglewood West building at 3959 Electric Road.
National Commerce Bancorp. operates 64 offices in Virginia and Tennessee, 48 of them in Kroger supermarkets. All are full-service branches.
