UVA ROLLS TO VICTORY IN SOCCER

Top-ranked Virginia used two goals and an assist from freshman forward Mike Slivinski to beat American 4-1 in men's soccer Wednesday in Charlottesville.

Claudio Reyna and Mike Fisher also scored for the Cavaliers (3-0), and Reyna had an assist.

American is 1-2.

In other sports in the region:

Trey Kirby had a goal and an assist as VMI beat Radford 2-0 in a rain-interrupted soccer game in Lexington.

Kirby's throw-in set up a goal by Matt Creech with 14 minutes, 38 seconds left in the first half.

With 4:58 to play in the first half, rain and lightning stopped play for about 30 minutes.

The Keydets (2-1) sealed the victory on Kirby's header with 16:17 to go.

The Highlanders are 0-3.

Nick Varney led the way with a 1-over-par 37 and Ray Harrell carded a 38 as Glenvar defeated Covington 157-177 in a Pioneer District golf match at Countryside.

Mark Folks was the low scorer for Covington with a round of 40.
