INSPECTORS CHECK AVANTE COMPLIANCE

State inspectors returned to the Avante at Roanoke nursing home this week to determine if the facility had succeeded in correcting dozens of problems identified in a state report.

Connie Kane, director of long-term care for the state Office of Health Facilities Regulation, said Wednesday that a determination of the facility's compliance with state and federal regulations could come as early as Sept. 17.

"We may be able to have our final conclusion reviewed by the commissioner by next Friday," she said. She could not provide a date when a final report would be made public.

During a surprise inspection in late July, Avante was cited for violating state licensing and federal certification regulations.

In its 34-page report, the state said the facility failed to grant dignity and respect to residents, maintained unsanitary conditions and did not carry out patient-care plans.

The report said the 141-bed facility on King George Street smelled of urine and was infested with flies.

The facility filed an acceptable plan of correction in response to the inspection and has until Friday to bring the facility up to standards.
