OLDE SALEM DAYS RETURN

Salem's big fall festival - Olde Salem Days - will blossom again Friday and Saturday.

The festival, sponsored by the Salem Jaycees and Salem merchants, is the main money-raising event for the Jaycees' causes.

The event will be kicked off with a concert Friday night at the Moyer Sports Complex from 5:30 to 10 p.m.

Bands this year will be Truckers Delight, who will entertain for the first two hours, and Rhythm Doctors, who will be featured the second two hours, beginning at 8 p.m.

Tickets will be $3 for those 12 and older.

Activities on Saturday, the main day of the festival, will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Main Street in downtown Salem and several side streets will be closed to traffic, as usual with Olde Salem Days.

Arts and crafts booths and an antique car show will be featured along Main Street and several streets crossing Main.

Scott Matthews, the Jaycee in charge, said this year's event will have more than 400 arts and crafts booths and more than 200 vehicles in the antique car show.

A children's fair will be held in Longwood Park, adjoining downtown.

Entertainment also will be provided at Longwood Park, the Roanoke County Courthouse, the old courthouse at Main Street and College Avenue, and at Library Square on Main Street.

The Friends of the Salem Public Library also will be holding its annual book sale at the library.

Events at the children's fair will include a 9-foot robot named "Robatica," a moonwalk, dunking booth, pony rides, petting zoo, face painting, clowns and storytelling.

The Salem Police and Fire departments will have their own events during the celebration.

Police will fingerprint children to establish an identification file. The Police Department began the procedure several years ago at the urging of parents.

Firefighters will have a fire-safety house.

Food courts will be set up at the Salem Library parking lot and at Longwood Park.

Matthews said that in an effort to ease parking congestion in downtown Salem, free shuttle buses will run between downtown and the Salem Civic Center from 10 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. on Saturday.
