The decision to hire the teacher was made after a parent complained to the Craig County School School Board that 56 children spread between two teachers would make the two classes too crowded.
One class would have 28 children and the other 29.
With the additional teacher, each class would have fewer than 20 children.
Superintendent Dallas Helems told the board, all of the county's classes through the third grade have fewer than 20 children per teacher, a ratio that is good and better than most other school divisions in western Virginia.
Craig's first-day enrollment was 406 at McCleary Elementary and 265 at Craig County High, the county's only two schools.
On another matter, the school board adopted a resolution opposing the planned closing of the U.S. Forest Service office, across the road from the school complex.
