Ashley Elizabeth Atkinson of 4040 Snowgoose Circle S.W., recently won first place in the 1993 Virginia Highlands Festival Creative Writing Contest's poetry division for ages 12-14.
The annual contest attracts several hundred entries from throughout the Southeast. Atkinson's poem, "Fairies at Play," has been published in the contest's journal, "Highland Voices." Last year, Atkinson's poem, "Rain," won first place in the ages 9-11 division.
Atkinson, daughter of Gary and Brenda Atkinson, is a eighth grader at Cave Spring Junior High.
Indian heritage is focus of Oct. 8-9 festival
The second annual Roanoke Valley Native American Heritage Festival and Pow Wow will be held Oct. 8-9 at Green Hill Park in Roanoke County.
Educators will present programs on Native American music, language, storytelling, sky lore, lifestyles, lodges, primitive weapons and flint knapping. Traditional Native American food will be served.
Activities begin Oct. 8 at 6 p.m. and include traditional, fancy, intertribal and specialty dancing and an old-style traditional dance contest for seniors and elders. The following day gates will open at 10 a.m.
The cost is $3 for students 4-17; $5 for adults; and $4 for senior citizens. Group rates for 15 or more are $2.50 a student and $4 per adult.
