PUNT, PASS & KICK TO START SOON IN REGION

The annual NFL Gatorade Punt, Pass & Kick competition is about to kick off at the local level for youths ages 8-15.

Entry forms are available at Sears stores, through local chapters of the Virginia Jaycees and at competition sites. Some area recreation departments may have information, and details also may be obtained through the PPK Hotline at 391-2763.

A valid birth certificate and a parental waiver signature are required, but there is no registration fee. The top finishers from each of eight age groups at the local level will advance to sectional competition. The sectional PPK finals will be Dec. 11 during halftime of the Washington Redskins-New York Jets game at RFK Stadium.

The area PPK competitions: Wednesday - 7 p.m., Christiansburg High School Sept. 18 - 1:30 p.m., Camden Field, Buena Vista Sept. 19 - 2 p.m., Walrond Park, Roanoke Oct. 3 - 2 p.m., Collinsville YMCA Oct. 9 - 2 p.m., GW-Danville High School Oct. 10 - 3 p.m., Jaycees football field, Blacksburg Oct. 16 - Noon, Calfee Park, Pulaski Oct. 17 - 2:30 p.m., Martinsville Junior High School

Former North Cross standout Dustin Fonder will lead the Roanoke College men's soccer team as the Marroons play host to the Domino's Classic at River's Edge Sports Complex beginning today.

Roanoke takes on Ursinus at 8 p.m. Greensboro College plays Beaver College in the opener at 6 p.m. The round-robin tournament, decided on a points system, concludes Saturday.

David Stanley fires a nine-hole total of 1-over par 36 to lead Bath County to a 161-191 Pioneer District golf victory over host James River at Botetourt Country Club in Fincastle.

Northside slipped by Lord Botetourt 293-297 in a Blue Ridge district golf match Thursday. Ryan Ketron of William Byrd was medalist with a 70, and Scott Griffin of Botetourt finished second with a 72. After three district matches, the Vikings lead Byrd, the 1992 Group AA champions, 911-916 in the district standings.
