DOW CORNING ANNOUNCES IMPLANT SETTLEMENT OFFER

A proposed $4.75 billion settlement would compensate women for maladies caused by silicone breast implants.

Dow Corning Corp., the largest maker of silicone gel breast implants until it stopped making them last year, revealed the settlement offer Thursday morning. The proposal could eliminate thousands of lawsuits filed against Dow Corning and others involved in making and distributing the implants.

It would pay for checkups for women with implants, removal of them and for treatment of various illnesses.

Individuals would get between $200,000 and $2 million, said Ralph Knowles, an Atlanta lawyer who represents plaintiffs.
