CONSTRUCTION ROLLER INJURES ROAD BUILDER

A construction worker was injured Thursday at a Southwest Roanoke County job site when a piece of equipment he was operating rolled over on him.

Officer F.C. Wilkins of the Roanoke County Police Department said the accident occurred about 2:20 p.m. at a subdivision off U.S. 221.

A worker was operating a vibratory roller for road construction. The roller was traveling over very soft dirt, which started to give way when the roller neared the side of the road, Wilkins said.

Workers hooked a front-end loader to the roller to pull it out of the dirt. But the dirt gave way and the roller - with the worker still on board - fell over.

"The operator attempted to jump off but could not and was struck by the roller," Wilkins said.

The worker - whose name was not released - was taken to Roanoke Memorial Hospital by helicopter. He was an employee of Joe Bandy & Son Inc., a Roanoke County excavating company.
