OBIT BRATTON, JOSEPH EMORY
BRATTON, Joseph Emory, 97, of Vinton, passed away Wednesday, September 8,
1993, at the V.A. Medical Center in Salem. He was a member of Thrasher
Memorial United Methodist Church in Vinton. Mr. Bratton was retired from the
American Viscose Corp. and a cattle rancher in Bedford County. He was a
veteran of World War I, and Commander of the H. H. McKenzie D.A.V. Chapter 3
from 1932 to 1933. At that time, Congressman Woodrum came to Roanoke and
requested Mr. Bratton's help in selecting a site for the V.A. Hospital.
Together they selected the site where the V.A. Medical Center stands today.
Surviving are four sons and three daughters-in-law, James E. Bratton, Vinton,
Wallace E. and Helen Bratton, Roanoke, Billy E. and Nancy Bratton, Roanoke
County, Marvin F. and Carolyn Bratton, Botetourt County; two daughters and
sons-in-law, Kitty B. and Cecil Saunders, Vinton, Jean B. and Richard Jamison,
Roanoke County; 12 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and two
great-great-grandsons. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday
from Oakey's Vinton Chapel with Dr. George Wesley Jones officiating. Interment
will follow in Sherwood Burial Park. Friends may call at Oakey's Vinton
Chapel.
