5 TEXAS A&M PLAYERS SUSPENDED FOR ACCEPTING MONEY

The NCAA notified Texas A & M on Friday that running back Greg Hill was suspended for five games and four other players received bans ranging from two games to one year for accepting money for summer work they did not perform.

The school and head coach R.C. Slocum were spared any punishment.

The NCAA said in a statement that linebacker Jessie Cox is suspended for the season. The other suspended players were wide receiver Brian Mitchell, four games; cornerback William Mitchell, three games; and offensive lineman James Brooks, two games.

The suspensions were retroactive to the Aggies' 24-0 victory over Louisiana State in their opener Sept. 4.

A Texas A & M spokesman said Friday the school had just been told of the sanctions and officials had no immediate comment.

The athletes were accused of accepting payments from Dallas booster Warren Gilbert, a former Aggies letterman. The Dallas Morning News revealed in stories in December that the players were on the payrolls as maintenance workers at a federally subsidized apartment complex owned by Gilbert.

After an investigation into the reports, Slocum suspended Hill and three others for the Cotton Bowl against Notre Dame on Jan. 1.
