Teen pregnancy

"The Challenge of Teen Pregnancy" will be the theme of Dr. Donald Stern on Monday for the first seasonal meeting of the Roanoke Valley Ministers Conference.

Stern, who is director of the Roanoke Public Health Department, will speak at Second Presbyterian Church, Mountain Avenue and Third Street Southwest. Fellowship begins at 10 a.m. with the meeting at 10:30.

The conference, whose president this year is David Wolfe, chaplain of Lewis-Gale Hospital, is interfaith and open for membership to ordained and lay religion professionals.

\ Pastor to direct singing

The Rev. Art Hearne, pastor of Lakeside Baptist Church of Salem, will direct singing at the annual meeting of the Virginia Assembly of Independent Baptists scheduled for Thursday and Friday at Clover Hill Baptist Church, 3100 Courthouse Road, Richmond. Among the speakers on Friday at 2:30 p.m. will be Paul Weyrich, a Washington supporter of causes favored by the "Religious Right."

The Independent Baptist assembly claims victory in the 1993 Virginia General Assembly for the defeat of riverboat gambling and licensing of religiously exempt day care centers.

\ Moved church dedication

The dedication of the relocated Boones Mill Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) will take place Sept. 26 at 3 p.m. The new building, which has cost about $350,000, is on Virginia 919 two miles southwest of Boones Mill. The former church on U.S. 220 has been sold to a Masonic lodge.

The Rev. Coretha Morra, pastor, said the new church is designed for both worship and fellowship. It will seat 115 in movable pews brought from the old building. Seven classrooms are included as well as a kitchen and offices.

Guest speaker for the dedication will be the Rev. Dr. Richard Harrison, president of Lexington Theological Seminary in Kentucky. Morra has been pastor of the Franklin County church for more than five years. About 70 regularly attend services.

\ New ministry

The Rev. Terry L. Shumaker has begun his ministry at Stone Church of the Brethren in Buena Vista. He has come from a four-year pastorate at Mount Vernon Church of the Brethren at Stuarts Draft. Shumaker was educated at Huntington College, Indiana University and Earlham School of Religion, all in Indiana. He and his wife, Carolyn, have three grown children.
