CHRISTIANSBURG TRIPS COVINGTON

Kareem Koonce's 58-yard touchdown run in the second quarter proved to be the difference as Christiansburg held on to defeat Covington 14-8 Friday night in a non-district game.

Christiansburg (1-1) did not complete a pass in five attempts but gained 258 yards on the ground, much of it in the first half.

Covington (0-2) closed to 14-8 following a 1-yard run by Tom Luckett with 5:04 left and recovered an ensuing onside kick, but could not penetrate the Demons' 35-yard line. \

Powell Valley 36

Radford 21

BIG STONE GAP - Radford had several long-distance plays, but Powell Valley got more than enough offense from running back Greg Bishop in a non-district victory over the Bobcats.

Bishop scored four touchdowns for Powell Valley (2-0) and ran for 206 yards on 25 carries. Quarterback Todd Zirkle added to Powell's 451 yards with a 8-for-14 passing night.

Radford (1-1) trailed 29-0 before scoring late in the third quarter. The Bobcats finished with 333 yards.

\ Narrows 41

Garden 20

OAKWOOD - Whitey Blankenship rushed for 164 yards and two touchdowns, including a game-opening 80-yard kickoff return as Narrows won its opener.

The Green Wave rushed for 255 yards, including 92 by Brett Moseley, and held Garden to 64. Teddy Lane returned Narrows' final touchdown 80 yards for a touchdown and also had a 1-yard touchdown run for the Green Dragons (0-2).

HOT SPRINGS - The Chargers (2-0, 1-0) rolled up 359 yards rushing and scored on every first-half drive in the Pioneer District opener for both teams. Junior running back Billy Thomas ran for 133 yards and scored two touchdowns, including a first-half 92-yard run. Craig County (0-2, 0-1) was held to 51 yards rushing, and 28 yards passing. \

Fort Chiswell 19

Galax 10

GALAX - Fort Chiswell scored three fourth-quarter touchdowns to overcome a 10-0 deficit and win its Mountain Empire District opener.

The Pioneers (1-1, 1-0) needed only four plays to march 39 yards following a Galax fumble and score their first touchdown on an 8-yard pass from Kenny Jones to Scott Hale with 10:15 remaining.

The winning touchdown came with 7:11 left on a 9-yard run by Kevin King. Kevin Beasley went 41 yards for Fort Chiswell's final touchdown with 1:33 left.

Jones completed nine of 19 passes for 168 yards to lead the Pioneers, who had 298 yards in total offense. The Maroon Tide (1-1, 1-1) was limited to 153 yards. \

ABINGDON - A missed extra-point kick proved to be the difference as Carroll County won for the first time in three games.

Nicky Rodrigue carried 35 times for 165 yards for the Cavaliers, who scored in the third quarter on a 1-yard run by Daniel Turman. Jerry Bono kicked the extra point.

Franklin County 27

ROCKY MOUNT - In a game that opened with back-to-back kickoff returns for touchdowns, the Lancers stepped up in classification and handed Franklin County its 20th consecutive loss, the longest current losing streak in Group AAA.

DeShannon Adams, a 5-foot-9, 186-pound senior, returned the opening kickoff 88 yards for a touchdown and scored three other times on runs of 8, 11 and 7 yards. He finished with 17 carries for 94 yards.

Laurel Park fumbled the snap after its first touchdown, allowing Franklin County (0-2) to take its only lead of the night when Stacy Helms returned the ensuing kickoff 80 yards. The point-after kick put the Eagles ahead 7-6.

Laurel Park (1-0) came back on the first of two scoring runs by Charles Craddock, who had four carries for 52 yards. Franklin County tied the score at 14 on a fumble recovery and 10-yard return, but the Lancers scored two more times in the second quarter.

Laurel Park had 344 yards in total offense, 297 on the ground, and held Franklin County to a total of 181 yards. \

Liberty 17

Appomattox 7

BEDFORD - Senior fullback Greg Richie ran for two touchdowns as the Minutemen won a Seminole District contest over the Raiders.

Appomattox (0-2) opened the scoring in the first quarter when senior tailback Jon Brest scored on a 1-yard run and then added the extra point. Brest finished with 45 of the Raiders' 58 yards rushing.

Richie, who also plays linebacker, answered for Liberty (1-1) with a 28-yard touchdown run. He rushed for 138 yards on 12 carries including 12-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. Liberty added a field goal in the third to cap the scoring.

Liberty quarterback Mike Padgett completed five of 10 passes for 106 yards with one interception. Seth Clabough was 9-for-25 for 139 yards with two interceptions for the Raiders. \

Amherst County 28

Staunton River 0

AMHERST - Cameron Kinney scored on gallops of 42 and 18 yards as the Lancers rolled to the non-district win over the Golden Eagles.

Larry Hunter added an 8-yard touchdown run and Alphonso Matthews scored on a 1-yard run to complete the scoring for Amherst County (1-0).

Staunton River fell to 0-2 overall. \

George Wythe 35

Castlewood 6

WYTHEVILLE - Chris Dickinson ran for 118 yards and one touchdown and quarterback Jeffrey Bourne scored one touchdown and threw for another score as the Maroons rolled to the Hogoheegee District win.

George Wythe (2-0, 1-0) led 28-0 before Castlewood (1-1, 0-1) scored on Todd Glover's 2-yard run in the fourth quarter.

The Maroons had 370 yards total offense while limiting the visitors to 189.

Bourne completed four of six passes for 88 yards, including a 65-yard touchdown pass to Randy Blevins in the second quarter. \

Martinsville 33

Cave Spring 8

MARTINSVILLE - Freshman running back Manti Venable rushed for 139 yards and scored three touchdowns as the Bulldogs scored all their points in the second half of the non-district season opener for both teams.

The Knights led 8-0 at halftime.

In the second half, Venable ran a kickoff 87 yards for a touchdown and scored on 10- and 72-yard runs.

Cave Spring was held to 14 yards rushing. \
