ROBERTSON SAYS POWELL `COULD BE NEXT EISENHOWER'

Gen. Colin Powell "would be the best candidate either party could present" for president in 1996 and could win the Republican nomination even if he supports abortion rights, religious broadcaster Pat Robertson said Friday.

"We might be looking at another Eisenhower," Robertson said of Powell, the retiring chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. "The question is: Which party gets him?"

Robertson, speaking to a small group of reporters over lunch as his Christian Coalition opened a two-day meeting, said Powell would be a perfect fit for "the leadership vacuum" in American politics.

"I think he would win in a walk," said Robertson, who unsuccessfully sought the GOP nomination in 1988. "I think he would be the best candidate either party could present."

Powell's political views are largely a mystery; he has refused to offer his views on abortion or other political issues, saying it would be inappropriate during his military tenure.

Powell has said he plans to write his memoirs and enjoy private life but has not ruled out seeking public office in the future.

Robertson and his organization fervently oppose abortion rights and have considerable power in the Republican nomination process. Yet Robertson's boosting of Powell did not sway when he was asked whether Powell could win the Republican nomination even if he declared his support for abortion rights.
