WYTHE ENROLLMENT UP AS SCHOOL YEAR BEGINS

Wythe County had 70 more students at the opening of schools than last year, for a total of 4,382.

Superintendent James Vaught said the increase is most evident in Rural Retreat where nearly 1,000 students are in elementary and high school.

The county's enrollment stabilized after declining for several years, but no increase was anticipated this year.

Vaught said he was unsure what has caused it.
