DEFENSE HELPS LORD BOTETOURT BEAT GLENVAR 18-12

Lord Botetourt coach Andy Ward could not have asked for a better way to start the high school football season after a disappointing 1992 season.

The Cavaliers opened the 1993 schedule with a bang last week by defeating Lynchburg Christian Academy, the 1992 Virginia Independent Conference champion. They continued their winning ways Friday night by defeating last year's Pioneer District champion, Glenvar, 18-12 in a non-district game at Glenvar.

"We talked about improving our attitudes this season and not getting down when we make mistakes," Ward said. "It has paid off so far."

The Highlanders' Chad Wallace returned the opening kickoff to the Cavaliers' 48-yard line, and after a nine-play, five-minute drive, senior quarterback Mike Stanley kicked a 22-yard field goal to give Glenvar a 3-0 lead.

The Cavaliers responded with a long drive of their own. Lord Botetourt took 11 plays to reach the Glenvar 10-yard line only to see Chad Sayers fumble an option pitch from quarterback Chris Deweese. The Highlanders' Don Elliot picked up the loose ball and returned it 83 yards to the Lord Botetourt 10 before Deweese ran him down.

"That was the biggest play of the game," Ward said. "If they had scored a touchdown there, then we could have been in some trouble."

Glenvar, however, could not take advantage of the opportunity.

The Highlanders had to switch Stanley to tailback and move Joey Taylor to quarterback because of an injury to sophomore tailback Eric East. Taylor completed a pass to Josh Harth, but the drive stalled and Glenvar ended up with another 22-yard field goal by Stanley.

"We were just a play or two away just like we were last week [in a loss to Floyd County], but we could not capitalize," said Brian Hooker, the Highlanders' coach.

Lord Botetourt immediately responded.

Deweese hit Barry Williams for a 43-yard gain to put the Cavaliers at the Glenvar 34. Nine plays later, Deweese hit Tim O'Quinn for a 6-yard touchdown pass. The point-after kick failed, but the Cavaliers had tied the score at 6.

On Glenvar's next possession, Stanley threw a deep pass that was intercepted by Deweese, who returned it to the Glenvar 45, setting up another Botetourt touchdown.

A 10-play drive ended with a 6-yard touchdown pass from Deweese to tight end Jeff Cronise. An interference penalty was called on the play.

"It was a great pass, but I was lucky to even catch it because there were a lot of people in the area," Cronise said.

Deweese, who completed eight of 11 passes for 139 yards, agreed.

"I saw two receivers in that area, but I spotted Jeff and he made a great catch," the quarterback said.

Lord Botetourt sealed the outcome late in the fourth quarter when Stanley fumbled at the Glenvar 8-yard line and the Cavalier's Ricky Gluth took it in for the touchdown.

"Our defense has won the game for us the last two weeks," Ward said. "I just hope we keep improving throughout the season."
