FORT CHISWELL WINS 19-10

Fort Chiswell scored three fourth-quarter touchdowns Friday night to overcome a 10-point deficit and win its Mountain Empire District football opener 19-10 over Galax.

Trailing 10-0, the Pioneers (1-1 overall, 1-0 district) needed only four plays to drive 39 yards after a Galax fumble and score their first touchdown on an 8-yard pass from Kenny Jones to Scott Hale with 10:15 remaining.

The winning touchdown came with 7:11 left on a 9-yard run by Kevin King.

Kevin Beasley went 41 yards for Fort Chiswell's final touchdown with 1:33 left.

Jones completed nine of 19 passes for 168 yards to lead the Pioneers, who had 298 yards in total offense.

The Maroon Tide (1-1, 1-1) was limited to 153 yards.

BLAND - Bobby Cheeks just about single-handedly beat the Bears (1-2, 0-2) in a Mountain Empire District game. The senior quarterback was 9-12 passing for 129 yards and two touchdowns, and also added 70 yards rushing in the rout. Junior running back Jason Byrd added 98 yards rushing for the Blue Devils (2-0, 1-0).

COVINGTON - Kareem Koonce's 58-yard touchdown run in the second quarter proved to be the difference as the Demons held on for their first victory.

Christiansburg (1-1) did not complete a pass in five attempts but gained 258 yards on the ground, much of it in the first half. Covington (0-2) closed to 14-8 following a 1-yard run by Tom Luckett with 5:04 left and recovered an ensuing onside kick, but could not penetrate the Demons' 35-yard line.

BASSETT - The Bengals ended a drought in openers with a non-district victory over the Terriers (0-1).

Darryle Hand scored on a 65-yard pass play, Clifford Wimbush had a 25-yard touchdown run and Tyree Hairston caught a 31-yard scoring pass for Bassett, which had lost its past four openers.
