BABY BITTEN 30 TIMES - BY A HUMAN, NOT ANIMAL

Carroll County authorities are trying to determine how - and why - a seven-month-old boy brought by his mother to Twin County Hospital early Saturday received some 30 bite marks on his head and body.

Separate examinations by an emergency room physician, a pediatrician and a dentist "confirmed that they are indeed human bites," Sheriff's Investigator Steve Williams said. "What we have not been able to determine is whether they are adult bite marks or child bite marks.

"They are really severe bites," he continued, explaining that "several" bites had pierced the baby's skin. "They are mostly concentrated on the head, but they are all over. I have never - never - seen anything like this before."

Two adults and one juvenile were questioned Saturday, but no arrests were made. Williams refused to say if those questioned were related to the baby.

The child is being held for treatment and observation in the Galax hospital until Monday, when he likely will be released into the custody of Carroll County Social Services.
