As a result, Barber and Derey became the second and third members of UVa's latest recruiting class to see action as "true" freshmen.
Barber, from Cave Spring High School, carried six times for 26 yards on the Cavaliers' final touchdown drive in a 38-0 romp over the Midshipmen. Derey, from Northside, played more than a dozen plays at defensive end.
"We've never survived with only two tailbacks - or hardly ever," Welsh said in explaining the decision to use Barber. "I liked what I saw. He ran inside and he held onto the ball."
Derey was not credited with any tackles, but he was involved mostly in the pass rush as Navy tried to beat the clock for a late touchdown.
"I thought I was going to play," said Derey, who split time at defensive end and tight end in the preseason. "The coaches said, `Be ready the whole game.' "
Derey has been credited with a quick adjustment to UVa's defense by fellow players, "but we play an attacking defense," he said. "It's easier to grasp because there's not as much reading [the offense] involved."
The first UVa freshman to play in a game this year was James Farrior, who saw action at linebacker in UVa's 43-29 victory over Maryland. Several other freshmen were in uniform Saturday, including Barber's twin brother, Ronde, a redshirt candidate.
"I thought I was going to play against Maryland when we got ahead [29-14]," Tiki Barber said, "but then, when it got to be 29-29, I was more concerned about winning the game.
"Now that I've been in a game, maybe they won't be so hesitant about using me."
\ EXTRA POINTS: Virginia's pep band, no longer recognized by the athletic department, unfurled a banner on the hill in the north end zone that read "Free the Pep Band." UVa's new band sat in the stands and played during the game, but only Navy's band took the field at halftime. . . . UVa fullback Charles Way, selected ACC offensive back of the week after rushing for 136 yards against Maryland, was limited to 24 yards in eight carries by the Midshipmen. . . . Starting defensive tackle Ryan Kuehl did not play because of a sprained knee, but he is expected back, along with linebacker P.K. Killian and offensive guard Bill Edwards, when the Cavaliers play Georgia Tech. Redshirt freshman Duane Ashman started in Kuehl's place Saturday. . . . UVa sold all but 1,200 tickets, but a small student turnout held the crowd to 38,900. Capacity is 42,000.
\ UVA NEXT WEEK: The Cavaliers (2-0 overall, 1-0 ACC) visit Georgia Tech on Thursday night for a game that will be televised nationally by ESPN. The teams also played a Thursday night ESPN game in 1991, won by Georgia Tech 24-21. UVa bombed the Yellow Jackets 55-24 last year. Georgia Tech defeated Furman 37-3 on Saturday.
