MCGUIRE PREVAILS AT FCS

Roanoke's Tim McGuire refused to be upstaged Saturday night.

McGuire won the 100-lap Late Model Stock Car feature race of the Dooley Printing 300 at Franklin County Speedway in Callaway after overshadowing Dicky Wilson's track record of 14.10 seconds in qualifying.

McGuire qualified second, seized the lead on the opening lap and coasted home after Wilson, in close pursuit, suffered a flat tire on lap 73.

The win was McGuire's third of the season. He last won on July 31.

Frankie Pennington, making his second FCS appearance this year, took second, just ahead of Rodney "Six-Pack" Cundiff. Dudley Lawhorn and Rick Sigmon were fourth and fifth, respectively.

Six-time winner Tony McGuire broke a ratchet in qualifying and chose not to run rather than start at the rear of the 20-car field.

In other FCS races Saturday night:

Jimmy Mullins and Phillip VanDerVeer staged a two-man battle in the Street Stock competition. Mullins prevailed in spite of several taps from VanDerVeer, an 11-time winner. Dale Marlowe was third.

In the Pure Stock race, R.W. Lawhorn passed second-place finisher Mike Owens on lap 17 en route to the victory. Red Hartman was third.

Mini-Stock points leader Steve Lynch nipped James Cox by a fender. Carlton Clark took third.

Rookie winner Gary Clifton overtook front-runner George Blankenship on lap 22 and moved into second in points. Points leader Steve Hurley finished second, and Norris Rader was third.
