RICHMOND RALLIES TO BEAT JMU

Greg Lilly scored on a 1-yard plunge with six seconds remaining Saturday as Richmond beat James Madison 20-13 in a Yankee Conference football game.

Richmond's Matthew Cornwell intercepted a pass by quarterback Mike Cawley on the James Madison 43 with 1:55 remaining to set up the winning touchdown.

The Spiders (2-0 overall, 1-0 league) had 202 yards rushing and 151 yards passing.

James Madison (1-1, 0-1) rushed for 105 yards and passed for 131.

Richmond's Uly Scott rushed for 153 yards on 29 carries and ran for a touchdown in the first quarter. Kevin Longacre kicked field goals of 33 and 31 yards.

The Dukes' Trey Weis kicked field goals of 42 and 33 yards, and Steve Agee scored on a 4-yard pass from Cawley.

Lilly completed 11 of 19 passes for 151 yards and three interceptions. \ Delaware 42\ William and Mary 35

NEWARK, Del. - Daryl Brown rushed for 174 yards and two touchdowns for the Blue Hens, who held off a late surge to defeat the Tribe in a Yankee Conference game.

After a 6-yard touchdown run by William and Mary's Troy Keen, Delaware (2-0, 1-0) reeled off 35 points to go up 35-7.

Brown and Lanue Johnson each rushed for two touchdowns, and quarterback Dale Fry ran in another.

William and Mary (1-1, 1-1) scored three touchdowns in the final three minutes, but Delaware was able to run out the clock to escape with the victory.

Keen scored his second touchdown with 7:06 left to cut the lead to 35-14, but Delaware's Kai Hebron scored from two yards out three minutes later for a 42-14 lead.

William and Mary quarterback Todd Durkin scored from the 19-yard line with 2:52 left. After the Tribe recovered an onside kick, lineman Rob Light recovered a fumble in the end zone to cut the lead to 42-28. Durkin then hit Terry Hammons on a 30-yard touchdown pass that cut the lead to 42-35 with 1:21 left.

\ Liberty 20\ Appalachian State 14

BOONE, N.C. - Travis Wilemon hit James McKnight on a 50-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter as the Flames used a potent aerial attack to beat the Mountaineers.

Wilemon hit 12 of 24 passes for 147 yards, and backup quarterback Antwan Chiles hit nine of 14 for 109 yards. It was Wilemon's pass to McKnight that enabled Liberty to erase a 14-12 deficit and hold on for the win.

Liberty (2-0) led 3-0 in the first quarter after Dan Whitehead hit a 41-yard field goal at the 6:26 mark.

The Mountaineers (0-2) went up 7-3 when Chip Hooks scored on a 39-yard run with 10:40 left in the second quarter. Johnny Smith scored on a 17-yard run 5:11 before halftime to give Appalachian State a 14-3 lead.

Whitehead hit a 23-yard field goal to pull Liberty to 14-6 at halftime.

In the third quarter, Adrian Cherry, who rushed for 111 yards, scored from the 1 as Liberty closed to 14-12, but an attempted pass for a two-point conversion failed.

Wilemon hit Dwayne Carswell on a two-point conversion after the last touchdown for the final margin.

Hooks led Appalachian State, rushing 16 times for 101 yards, and Smith rushed for 75 yards on eight carries.

Virginia Union 14, Livingstone 6: At Wilmington, N.C., Bobby Phillips rushed for 221 yards, including a 53-yard touchdown on his final carry, as Virginia Union won a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association game. The game was scoreless for three quarters. Then Virginia Union marched 82 yards to set up Anthony Wilson's 1-yard scoring run with 6:49 left. Phillips' touchdown secured the victory with 2:39 left.

\ Hampton 35, Bowie State 6: At Bowie, Md., Malcom Benson scored two touchdowns to lead the Pirates to CIAA victory. After Monty Bennett scored on a 21-yard pass from Bowie State quarterback Nate Jamison to pull the Bulldogs to 7-6, Benson scored the first of his two touchdowns on a 2-yard run. Hampton added three more touchdowns, closing out the scoring with a 13-yard run by Benson. Hampton quarterback Matthew Montgomery completed 18 of 30 passes for 255 yards.

\ Virginia State 10, West Liberty 7: At West Liberty, W.Va., Gregory Clark threw for 322 yards and a touchdown to lead Virginia State (2-0). Clark was 28-of-46 but was intercepted three times. His favorite target was Donald Wheeler, who had eight receptions for 126 yards, including a 12-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter to make it 10-0.

\ Swarthmore 24, Randolph-Macon 17: At Ashland, Patrick Straub threw for two touchdowns and ran for another in his first college game as Swarthmore beat the Yellow Jackets. The freshman quarterback threw two 11-yard touchdown passes to Josh Drake in the first half and ran for 91 yards for a third touchdown. Straub completed 11 of 20 passes for 113 yards and one interception. He also rushed for 152 yards on 14 carries.

\ Rowan 54, Newport News 7: At Newport News, Steve Anderson threw 45 yards for a touchdown and rushed for two more as Rowan beat the Shipbuilders. Anderson rushed for 83 yards on 12 carries for Rowan (1-0). Ed Hesson was 13-of-27 passing for the Profs, throwing for 161 yards and hitting Calvin Easley with a touchdown pass. Easley also scored on a 3-yard run in the second quarter.

\ Wesley 31, Bridgewater 0: At Bridgewater, Milt Alexander ran for two touchdowns and Pete Davis scored on a 42-yard run as Wesley beat the Eagles. Davis rushed for 216 yards on 28 carries as Wesley (1-0-1) racked up 535 total yards. Alexander had 72 yards rushing on 10 carries, scoring on runs of 13 and 14 yards.

\ Hampden-Sydney 22, Muhlenberg 21: At Hampden-Sydney, Barry Hollingsworth kicked a 22-yard field goal with 16 seconds remaining to boost the Tigers. The Mules led 21-7 after Viken Manoukian scored on a 5-yard run with 23 seconds left in the third quarter. The Tigers fought back in the fourth quarter with Marshall Wood scoring on touchdown passes from Brian Crist and Wes Andrews.

\ Clinch Valley 37, Tusculum 31: In Wise, Ernest Starker scored on runs of 22 and 7 yards to help the Cavaliers (1-1) beat Tusculum. With Clinch Valley leading 23-14, Starker scored in the third and fourth quarters. He finished with 99 yards on 17 carries.
