TEACHER OF THE WEEK

Bill Bova's idea of teaching is simple. "You should try to be patient, but firm."

Both qualities are recognized by his students. "He never yells, he just waits for us to be quiet. He's a cool teacher," said one of the pupils who nominated him.

Bova has plenty of experience. He has been teaching elementary school for 24 years. Now, he teaches mostly fourth- and fifth-graders, but he also finds time to tutor pupils of all ages from assorted schools after school hours. He teaches all subjects at Grandin Court, but his favorite is probably math, he said.

Teaching, he says, has slowly become one of his hobbies, but he also likes to travel. In addition to traveling and school, he enjoys going to craft shows in the surrounding areas. He is married, and his wife is a kindergarten teacher.

If you have a nomination for Teacher of the Week, send the name of the nominee, his or her school and why you think that teacher should be honored. Include your name, telephone number and school and send to NewsFun, P.O. Box 2491, Roanoke 24010-2491. The Science Museum of Western Virginia will award each Teacher of the Week a gift certificate for $50 to be spent at the museum's store.
