ROANOKE VALLEY ECONOMIC INDICATORS

Both the number and the value of building permits in the Roanoke Valley surged in August.

The 505 permits issued last month by Roanoke, Salem and Roanoke County rose 22 percent from 413 in July and 25 percent from 403 a year earlier.

The $15,058,939 in last month's permit values was 72 percent ahead of July's $8,716,205 and 31.8 percent over $11,423,982 in August 1992.

Most of the gain came in Roanoke, which issued 205 permits for construction with an estimated worth of $8,569,114. Roanoke County reported 226 permits with a value of $4,392,679; Salem listed 74 permits worth $2,097,146. - Staff report
