CARTER SAYS SYRIA WILL JOIN IN PEACE PROCESS

Jimmy Carter, a peacemaker of the '70s, no longer has an official role in world affairs. But he still talks with the likes of Israel's Shimon Peres, Syria's Hafez Assad and the Palestinians' Yasser Arafat.

And he says the peace agreements aren't about to stop.

"This has opened the door not only to opportunities for the Israelis and Palestinians to make progress," the former president said after Monday's mutual-recognition ceremony. "I think immediately you will see falling into place an agreement between Jordan and the Israelis. And my guess is that Assad will not want to be left out of the peace process either." - Associated Press
