AUBURN'S SHOT AT BUZZER SINKS JAMES RIVER 55-53

Angie Simpkins' shot at the buzzer lifted unbeaten Auburn to a 55-53 victory over visiting James River on Monday night in a non-district girls' high school basketball game.

James River led 26-24 at halftime and 43-38 at the end of the third quarter. With 14 seconds remaining in the game, Auburn (3-0) inbounded the ball and had a shot blocked with four seconds to play. The ball was deflected to Simpkins, who put up a 10-footer from the center of the lane.

Simpkins, a senior point guard, finished with a game-high 18 points. The Eagles' Lori Lyons finished with 15 points and eight rebounds, and Sherry Smith had eight assists and five points.

Theresa Hickman led the Knights (0-3) with 17 points, Angie Johnson had 15 and Laura Cook had 12. \

PEARISBURG - Rebecca McNeil scored 22 points as the Demons beat the Spartans in a non-district game.

Fifty-nine fouls were called in the game, but Giles (0-3) couldn't take advantage of its free throws. It made 13 of 35 in the game and only three of 13 in the fourth quarter, when it cut Christiansburg's lead to six points. Giles missed the front end of five one-and-one chances.

The Demons made 16 of 28 free throws and got 13 points from Carrie Simmons and 12 from Crystal Moles.

Tomika Saunders had 12 points for Giles. \
