McConnell has been an assistant coach at Pitt since 1991. She also served as the Lady Panthers recruiting coordinator and director of the Lady Panther Basketball Camp.
McConnell replaces Gay Hemphill, who resigned in June for a job at Manhattan College.

Two area professional golfers are in the hunt for the title at the Molson's Southern Chapter Championship in Harrisonburg. Tim Holbrook of Hidden Valley Country Club and Hanging Rock's Chip Sullivan shot 1-over-par 72s and are in a group of six one shot behind Herb Hooper of Petersburg. The golfers, 47 professionals from the Southern Chapter of the Middle Atlantic Section of the PGA, conclude play today at Spotswood Country Club.

Roanoker Troy Stultz bowled his second 300 game within a month Monday night in the Major Scratch League at Hilltop Lanes. Stultz, 18, added his perfect score to games of 237 and 204 for a 741 series. He had rolled his first 300 game ever in August.
Roanoke College will play host to Randolph-Macon at 4 p.m. today at Alumni Field in a rematch of last year's Old Dominion Athletic Conference women's soccer championship, won by the Yellow Jackets 1-0. It is the ODAC opener for Roanoke, a 3-0 loser to Methodist last week, while Randolph Macon is 2-1 overall and 1-0 in the conference.
Two Roanoke Valley Youth Soccer Club teams won championships Sunday in the Autumn Chase Soccer Tournament in Bristol.
The Roanoke Star Under-11 Green team rallied to beat St. Giles Omega of Greenville, S.C., 4-2 in one championship. Michael Anders' strong play in goal kept the Star in the game early, and Roanoke rallied behind the offensive play of Alborz Satheddin and Brad Newton. Newton had two goals, Satheddin had a goal and an assist, and Paul Cantor added Roanoke's other goal.
The Roanoke Under-15 White team won its title in a five-team round-robin competition, winning all four games. Four Roanoke players - Tien Cao, Trevor Plunkett, Don Haga and Ernie Hale - had two goals each. The Star defeated the Johnson City (Tenn.) Falcons 3-1, Greenville (S.C.) 2-1, Knoxville (Tenn.) 3-1 and Greenville (Tenn) 2-0.
