CFW Telephone Co. is scheduled to announce today a $5.2 million expansion of the fiber-optic communications network that serves Covington, Clifton Forge and Alleghany County.
It will be part of a 118-mile project that will diversify the fiber network and enable full access to a wide variety of enhanced communication services.
The project will include a new high-capacity fiber, terminal equipment and upgrades to other electronic interfaces. The work is scheduled to be complete in late 1994.
Jim Quarforth, president of the company, said the project will complement upgrading of digital switching equipment.
Glynn Loope, executive director of the Alleghany Highlands Economic Development Authority, said a technologically advanced communications network is critical in preparing the area for the 21st century.
"Because of this and other investments," he said, "our part of rural Virginia is able to compete with any location in the nation for telecommunication and telemarketing industries. It is a new means to drive our local and regional economy." - Staff report
