BALANCED INDIANS ROUT SALEM 52-22

Eleven players scored for Blacksburg as the Indians trounced Salem 52-22 Tuesday night in a non-district high school girls' basketball game.

Salem went 18 minutes between its fourth and fifth field goals. The Spartans scored only seven points in the second and third quarters.

Amy Mathena and Lisa Price scored eight points each to pace the balanced Blacksburg (4-1) attack. Shellie Johnson had six points to lead Salem. \

William Byrd 41

Radford 33

RADFORD - Kelly Runyon hit her first six shots, mostly from the perimeter, as William Byrd held off Radford in a non-district game.

The teams were even with 28 rebounds each, but Radford went 13-for-41 from the floor and did not score a field goal in the fourth quarter. Full-court pressure was effective for Byrd (3-1) late in the game. Radford, which was paced by freshman Charlee Taylor with 11 points, is off to its worst start in years (0-5).

BUCHANAN - Angie Johnson led four players in double figures with 16 points as the Knights (1-3) whipped Rockbridge County. The Wildcats (3-3) got 13 points from Sara Dooley. \

Lord Botetourt 78

Covington 23

DALEVILLE - Jenny Gates had 21 points and Summer Plunkett added 20 as the Cavaliers ripped Covington in a non-district game.

Lord Botetourt (5-1) bolted to a 20-0 lead after the first quarter and never was threatened. Ashley Moore added 13 points.

Covington dipped to 0-3. \

Floyd County 82

Galax 57

FLOYD - Lynette Nolley and Melissa Cantrell led a balanced attack as the Buffaloes swamped Galax in a Mountain Empire District game.

Nolley and Cantrell divided 28 points as Floyd County (5-1, 3-0) led 48-28 at halftime and cruised to victory. Galax (2-1) got a game-high 33 points from Jackie Dickens. \
