OBIT HICKS, HORACE JOHNSTON

HICKS, Horace Johnston, 73, of Roanoke, died Monday, September 13, 1993, in a local hospital, following a lengthy illness. He was born in Moneta, Virginia, on August 30, 1920, to the late Warren and Ethel (Johnston) Hicks. Mr. Hicks was the oldest son in a family of nine children. He served in the United States Marine Corps. during World War II. Since 1939, Mr. Hicks has made his home in Roanoke, where he was employed by Graves-Humphreys, Inc. for 32 years. Upon early retirement from Graves-Humphreys, he owned and operated Cave Spring Hardware for ten years. Mr. Hicks was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Roanoke. Surviving are his wife, Belva Mahood Hicks; and his five children, two sons, Douglas Alexander Hicks and his wife, Cindy Cline Hicks, Vinton, Dr. Christopher Mahood Hicks and his wife, Susan Chappelle Hicks, Bedford; three daughters, Kathleen Hicks Kinsey and her husband, Neal, Roanoke, Margaret Hicks Peel and her husband, Collin, Wytheville; and Helen Hicks Alberse and her husband, Peter, Trabuco Canyon, Calif. Surviving also are six grandchildren and two stepgrandchildren, Everett (Rett) Collin Peel Jr., Sarah Elizabeth Hicks, Cameron Douglas Peel, Douglas Alexander Hicks Jr., David Nathanial Hicks, Andrew Thomas Alberse, Diana Garland Hughes and her husband, Tim, and Elizabeth Anne Kinsey. He is remembered by his sisters and brothers, Helen Hicks Johnson, Chesapeake, Laura Manning Hicks Morgan, Moneta, Virginia Hicks Moul and her husband, Kenneth, Fairfax, Edith Hicks Krokowski (deceased), and her husband, Alex, Constableville, N.Y., Dorothy Hicks Palmer, Salem, Glen W. Hicks and his wife, Helen, Moneta, William F. Hicks and his wife, Nancy, Roanoke, and Marie Hicks Allen, St. Augustine, Fla. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Friday, September 17, 1993 at Oakey's South Chapel by the Reverend Robert D. Smith of First Presbyterian Church. Interment will follow in Evergreen Burial Park. Friends may call after 9 a.m. Thursday at Oakey's South Chapel, where the family will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the American Cancer Society (P.O. Box 554, Roanoke, VA 24033) or First Presbyterian Church (P.O. Box 8538, Roanoke, VA 24014).
