OBIT POINDEXTER, FRANCIS SCHUBERT
POINDEXTER, Francis Schubert, 78, of Glade Hill, died Tuesday morning,
September 14, 1993, at his residence, Pioneer Acres. Mr. Poindexter was born
March 4, 1915, at his family homeplace, Pioneer Acres, in Franklin County, the
third son of the late Benjamin Cephus and Betty Scales Poindexter. After
receiving his education in the public schools of Franklin County, Mr.
Poindexter operated his own lumber business and farm until moving to Tennessee
in 1940, where he was employed by the TVA as a heavy equipment machinist
during World War II. He returned to Franklin County in 1944 and was well known
throughout his life as a farm tractor and equipment mechanic, electrician, and
sawyer. He owned and operated Poindexter's Gulf, a garage and radiator
business. Mr. Poindexter was active in many civic activities including fund
raising during the 1950's for the original construction of Franklin Memorial
Hospital, serving as clerk of his voting precinct for 27 years, participating
in the local Democratic Party, holding top offices in the Glade Hill Ruritan
Club and participating in Sunday School and choir activities at Crafts United
Methodist Church. In March of 1993, he was recognized and awarded by the Rocky
Mount Lodge #201 A.F. & A.M. for 50 consecutive years of membership
association. Mr. Poindexter is survived by his devoted wife of 52 years, Katie
Ingram Poindexter, Glade Hill; one daughter and son-in-law, Margaret Danna and
Jim Hayes, Glade Hill; two sons and daughters-in-law, Charles Douglas and
Janet Beat Poindexter, Seaford, Gary Neal and Penny Stoner Poindexter, Glade
Hill; two grandchildren, Sherrie Lynn Poindexter, Glade Hill, Charles Ashton
Poindexter, Roanoke; four stepgrandchildren, Brian Burkley, Seaford, Bruce
Burkley, Boston, Mass., Erin Burkley, Boulder, Color., and Adam Burkley, Hilo,
Hawaii; two brothers, Dr. J. Carl Poindexter, Salem, Richard Warren
Poindexter, Roanoke. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at
Flora Funeral Chapel with Rev. Betty Marshall officiating. Interment will
follow in the Poindexter Family Cemetery, Route 655, Glade Hill, with masonic
rites by Rocky Mount Lodge #201 A.F. & A.M. In lieu of flowers, the family
suggests any memorials be made to the Crafts United Methodist Church Building
Fund, c/o Sunie Mitchell, Rt. 1, Box 206, Glade Hill, VA 24092. The family
will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Flora
Funeral Service, 342 S. Main Street, Rocky Mount.
