OBIT ATKINSON, HELEN SHANK
ATKINSON, Helen Shank, 85, of Christiansburg, died September 13, 1993,
after an extended illness. She was born September 19, 1907, the daughter of
the late James Marion and Cammie Perdue Shank. Helen was a member of St. Paul
United Methodist Church. Known affectionately as "Mama A," she had served as a
resident counselor at Radford University from 1960-1973. Helen was preceded in
death by her husband, Macil Richard Atkinson and a granddaughter, Gail
Atkinson Palmarini. She is survived by two children, a son and
daughter-in-law, Lewis R. and Ann Jackson Atkinson, Roanoke, a daughter and
son-in-law, Betty A. and Harold G. Linkous, Christiansburg. Four grandchildren
and their families also survive, Linda Atkinson, Roanoke, Sara A. and Daniel
Boehme, Westminister, Calif., H. David and Brenda T. Linkous, Bedford, Carol
A. and Jack Nienke, Garner, N.C.; a grandson-in-law, James Palmarini,
Cincinnati, Ohio; five great-grandchildren, Lucy Treado, Lucia and Nina
Palmarini, Trevor and Taylor Nienke. Also surviving are two sisters and two
brothers-in-law, Ruth Angle Kemp, Ferrum, Gertrude S. and Thomas H. Pendleton,
Roanoke, Banks Atkinson, Shawsville. Helen is survived by a number of nephews
and nieces, James S. Angle, Ferrum, Gerald D. Pendleton, Scarborough, England,
Mortimer Sisson, Hopewell, Richard Sisson, Fort Worth, Texas, Larry Atkinson,
Shawsville, H. Frank Dooley and Glen W. Dooley, both of Shawsville, Doris D.
Shupe, Christiansburg, Elizabeth M. Young, Naperville, Ill., Nell M. McKane,
Aiken, S.C., Ann M. Fortin, Decatur, Ill. Funeral services will be held at St.
Paul United Methodist Church in Christiansburg on Thursday, September 16,
1993, at 11 a.m. with the Reverend Douglas Kanney and the Reverend James S.
Angle officiating. Interment will follow at Piedmont Cemetery, Shawsville. The
family will receive friends on Wednesday from 7 until 9 p.m. at
Richardson-Horne Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that
memorial gifts be made to St. Paul United Methodist Church, PO Box 96,
Christiansburg, VA 24073 or the American Cancer Society, PO Box 554, Roanoke,
VA 24003-0554. Friends may call at Richardson-Horne in Christiansburg.
