BASSETT STAYS UNBEATEN

In a battle of two of the top Piedmont District teams, junior Kim Hairston scored 20 points as Bassett beat Martinsville 64-59 in girls' basketball Tuesday night.

Bassett (4-0 overall, 3-0 in the Piedmont) is ranked No. 1 in Timesland. Martinsville (2-2, 2-1) was led by Keenya Hairston with a game-high 24 points.

\ James River 64, Rockbridge County 35: In Buchanan, Angie Johnson led four scorers in double figures with 16 points as the Knights (1-3) whipped the Wildcats.

Rockbridge County (3-3) got 13 points from Sara Dooley. \

Nelson County 47, Liberty 23: In Bedford, Nelson County roared to a 15-2 lead, held the Minettes to six points in the second half - one in the third quarter - and went on to the Seminole District victory.

Liberty (3-2, 3-2) lost point guard Amy Baxter at halftime because of illness and could not mount an offense. Baxter complained of dizziness and was taken to Bedford County Memorial Hospital.

Angie Vest had 14 points, six on 3-pointers, for the Governors (3-1, 3-1).

\ Floyd County 82, Galax 57: In Floyd, Lynette Nolley and Melissa Cantrell led a balanced attack as the Buffaloes swamped Galax in a Mountain Empire District game.

Nolley and Cantrell split 28 points for Floyd County (5-1, 3-0), which led 48-28 at halftime and cruised to victory.

Galax (2-1) got a game-high 33 points from Jackie Dickens.

\ Lord Botetourt 78, Covington 23: In Daleville, Jenny Gates had 21 points and Summer Plunkett added 20 as the Cavaliers ripped Covington in a non-district game.

Lord Botetourt (5-1) bolted to a 20-0 lead and never was threatened. Ashley Moore added 13 points.

Covington is 0-3. \

Alleghany 67, Christiansburg 55: In Christiansburg, Trisha Rice scored 18 points and Nicole Curtis added 16 as the Mountaineers downed the Demons in a non-district game.

Alleghany (4-1) hit 16 of 21 shots from the free-throw line.

Rebecca McNeil of Christiansburg (3-2) led all scorers with 23 points.

\ Laurel Park 63, Chatham 45: In Martinsville, Torsheda Dillard scored the 1,000th point of her career, helping the Lancers defeat the Cavaliers in the Piedmont District.

Dillard needed 16 points to reach to 1,000 and scored 17. Toy Perkins led Laurel Park with 19 points.

Juanita Crews paced Chatham with 15 points. \

Giles 58, Bland 25: In Pearisburg, Kelly Williams scored 11 points as the Spartans crushed the Rockets in the Mountain Empire District.

All Giles players scored as the Spartans (1-3, 1-2) led from the start.

Rachel French of Bland (0-4, 0-3) led all scorers with 15 points.

\ Magna Vista 60, Fieldale-Collinsville 37: In Martinsville, Angie Morton scored 17 points and Kristy Wilkins added 10 as the Warriors rolled past the Cavaliers in the Piedmont District.

Magna Vista (6-0 overall, 3-0 Pioneer) led by six after three quarters, then outscored Fieldale-Collinsville 19-2 in the fourth period to pull away.

T.J. Hayes led the Cavaliers (0-3, 0-3) with 13 points. \

Staunton River 48, Appomattox 38: In Moneta, Tanya Nelms and Dana Bowles rallied the Golden Eagles in the second and third quarters as they defeated the Raiders in the Seminole District.

Nelms scored 12 of her 14 points in the second quarter to give Staunton River a six-point lead. After Appomattox (2-3, 2-3) rallied in the third quarter, Bowles sank three baskets to help her team regain the lead.

Stephanie Robinson led the Raiders with 20 points.

Courtney Hurd of Staunton River (3-0, 3-0) was a defensive star with 11 rebounds and 10 steals. \

Tygarts Valley 59, Highland 45: In Monterey, three players scored in double figures as the visitors beat the Rams in a game between teams from Virginia and West Virginia. \

Rocky Gap 71, Grayson County 57: In Rocky Gap, Nancy Tupper scored a game-high 19 points as Rocky Gap romped past Grayson County in a Mountain Empire District game.

The Eagles are 4-2 overall and 2-1 in the district. Grayson (0-3, 0-3) was led by Tia Stuart with a game-high 21 points. \

Northwood 53, George Wythe 32: In Wytheville, George Wythe lost its third consecutive game despite 12 points by freshman Lisa Garland in the Hogoheegee District. \

Bath County 41, Riverheads 39: In Hot Springs, the Chargers (2-1) rallied for a non-district victory behind Ricketta Ricketts's 17 points.

\ Rural Retreat 60, Castlewood 54: In Castlewood, Tanya Tarter and Cassie Phipps scored 14 each and Beth Ketner added 13 as the Indians overcame an early deficit to beat the Blue Devils in the Hogoheegee District. Rural Retreat improved to 4-0, 3-0. \
