Circuit City Stores Inc., Richmond-based electronics retailer operating in Roanoke, on Wednesday reported a 30 percent increase in second-quarter profits, partly due to expansion into new markets. Profits rose to $28 million, or 29 cents per share, from $21.5 million, or 22 cents per share, in the 1992 period. Sales increased 26 percent, to $906.7 million from $721.3 million. Comparable-store sales rose 6 percent, though exact figures were not available. Those measure stores operating at least a year.
The company recently opened two "superstores" in the Boston area and four in the Chicago market. It also opened one in Philadelphia and another in Tucson, Ariz.
