"Communism is far from dead on the territory of the former U.S.S.R.," Solzhenitsyn said Tuesday. "Millions of communist cadres remain in reserve, and its roots remain embedded in the consciousness and the daily life of the people."
At the same time, the advent of capitalism has led to "savage and repulsive forms of behavior, the plunder of the nation's wealth, the likes of which the West has not known," he said. "Many were swept down the path of shamelessness, with the unbridled adaption of the worst features of human behavior."
Solzhenitsyn, 74, gave his speech in Schaan, Liechtenstein, at the International Academy for Philosophy. The academy awarded him an honorary doctorate.

Eighty-year-old actress Loretta Young is in love with an older man. She married costume designer Jean Louis, 85, a friend disclosed Wednesday.
"Both our families are delighted, too," Daily Variety columnist Army Archerd quoted Young.
The couple were married Friday at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Beverly Hills, said Archerd, who is a friend of both.
Young starred in nearly 100 motion pictures, winning an Academy Award as best actress for "The Farmer's Daughter" in 1948. Louis won an Oscar for "The Solid Gold Cadillac" in 1956.
