JUDGE TO SENTENCE ACCOUNTANT FOR EMBEZZLING

A judge said Wednesday there was enough evidence to find a Franklin County accountant guilty of embezzling from a local swim club.

Judge Robert P. Vines said he would impose a sentence on accountant Dennis Gilreath after receiving a presentencing report.

Authorities charged Gilreath with embezzling more than $1,000 from Furnace Creek Swim Club when he was treasurer in 1989 and 1990.

Furnace Creek's 150-member roster includes some of the county's most prominent residents, including Commonwealth's Attorney Cliff Hapgood and Rocky Mount Police Chief Butch Jenkins.

For that reason, Hapgood did not prosecute the case. Pittsylvania County Commonwealth's Attorney David Grimes was appointed special prosecutor.
