Circuit Judge William Sweeney sentenced Dale Adrine Flinn after hearing testimony in July about how Flinn violently beat, raped and sodomized a 24-year-old Roanoke woman early Nov. 28.
The victim met Flinn and Claiborn Roscoe Dooley at a bar and accepted their offer of a ride home.
Instead, they drove to the Hardy Ford boat launch at Smith Mountain Lake, where the victim said Flinn ripped her clothes off then beat her until she performed oral sex on him and had intercourse with both men.
She suffered a broken nose, and her fingers were crushed in the car window during the attack.
A deputy on a routine patrol spotted the vehicle and investigated. Flinn and Dooley fled the scene on foot, and the victim told the officer she had been raped.
Flinn stole a truck from a nearby house and was apprehended in Kentucky two weeks later. He denied ever being in Bedford County. His story changed after Dooley pleaded guilty to rape and sodomy.
Sweeney did not sentence Flinn to the maximum penalty, life imprisonment. Flinn will serve the terms concurrently.
Dooley is to be sentenced in October, Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney Randy Krantz said.
Flinn served one year of a three-year sentence in California for attempted robbery and violating parole when he moved to Virginia, Krantz said. Once here, he was arrested for possessing a sawed-off shotgun. Illegal substance charges are pending in Nevada, Krantz said.
