Valerie Gray Hardcastle of Virginia Tech's philosophy department will explore that question during a free Chalk Talk, "Who is Really Conscious?" Sept. 25, 10 a.m., in 3076 Derring Hall on the Virginia Tech campus.
Hardcastle will describe how to decide who has qualitative experience on the basis of a functional description of the mind.

Psychology Professor Scott Geller will talk about using psychology to change people's behavior. His talk is in 3092 Derring Hall.
Geology department head James Craig will discuss the search for gold and answer such questions as "Why is gold so valuable?" and "Where can you find it?" The session also will offer audience members a chance to pan for gold.
His talk will be in 2044 Derring Hall, across from the Museum of Geological Sciences, 2062 Derring Hall.
Chalk Talks are sponsored by the College of Arts and Sciences and are held at 10 a.m. on the days of home football games.
